Arrow READ ABSTRACT Orthodontics is one of several treatment options and an important component of interdisciplinary care when considering how to conservatively repair a significant breakdown of the masticatory system. Yet, the completed orthodontic treatment may inhibit the dentist’s ability to perform subsequent restorative procedures. Part of the problem may stem from the fact that some orthodontic training programs do not teach objective treatment goals related to ideal function. Interdisciplinary treatment aims should include dental and facial esthetics, periodontal health, stable condyle–fossa relationship, optimum functional occlusion, a stable result, and satisfaction of the patient’s chief complaint. Because restorative procedures are generally the last to be performed, the restorative dentist will want to ensure that the orthodontist understands and can accomplish the desired results. The orthodontist should understand the needs of the restorative dentist and confirm that the desired result can be accomplished. With measurable shared goals and regular communication before and during treatment, all team members know each other’s expectations, thus improving predictability of the case.

Their concerns regarding the look of worn, chipped, or cracked teeth can often mask complex problems rooted in functionally derived issues. The dentist who overlooks this—thusly treating only esthetics—may fail. This issue can often be compounded by the patient;s limited focus on the visible anterior teeth with little concern for the posterior teeth.
